Comment: Pope Francis, SSPX and the Year of Mercy
Pope Francis, SSPX and the Year of Mercy
A number of people have asked for a comment on the latest Pope Francis / SSPX news.
There is no doubt people will have all types of opinions on this. For my part, I find I cannot trust Francis' Vatican, but I will, for now, simply watch this development.
We have always known that SSPX confessions are valid (by means of supplied jurisdiction at time of grave crisis), and we've always known the SSPX is not in schism, but this statement by Francis may serve to at least "legitimize" the SSPX in the eyes of many people who are wary or confused.
I’m sure there are also those who will take a strictly rabbinical approach: “The Pope means you may only go to the SSPX confessions starting at midnight on the Year of Mercy, and may not go after midnight at the end of the Year of Mercy, for after this you are again a schismatic.”
As I said, I am not terribly bowled-over by this. My main focus is the upcoming Synod whose working document is so disastrous that even Archbishop Schneider warned it “pushes an agenda contrary to Divine Law.”
