Sydney’s 2008 World Youth Day Theme Written By Rock “Idol” who has ‘No Problem’ with Gay Marriages

Songwriter says he has been to gay clubs “heaps of times”

by John Vennari

The May 16 Zenit report read, “The theme song for World Youth Day 2008 was written by singer/songerwriter Guy Sebastian, the winner of the first Australian idol context in 2003.”[1]

Guy Sebastian

This is the same Guy Sebastian who ridiculed Catholic teaching against homosexuality. In an October 2006 interview, Sebastian was asked if homosexuality clashed with his Christian beliefs.

Sebastian answered, “That’s the sad side of Christianity. That’s not how it’s meant to be. I’ve been to gay clubs heaps of times. That’s the old fundamentalist way of thinking that’s unfortunately spread through all these generations. They miss the whole point of Christianity which is love. God loves people whether they are black, white, gay, straight, bisexual, whatever. As a Christian, we’re [sic] never going to get close to being sinless or perfect, and I’m no better than anyone else on this earth, but our No. 1 goal is to be as loving as we can.”

When asked if he was against gay marriage, Sebastian responded, “I’m not really anti anything. If you’re a gay couple, why not? I don’t really have a stance because I don’t know what it’s like to be told you’re not allowed to marry somebody. That doesn’t seem fair to me.”[2]

This is a role model for Catholic youth?

This is the man to be showcased at one of the world’s largest gathering of Catholic young people? With thousands of priests and hundreds of bishops present? With the Pope present?

Mr. Sebastian is yet another confused individual who does not know the most basic distinctions in Catholic morality. His stance is completely contrary to Catholic teaching and to the natural law. He fails to see that though love is the essentially element of Christianity, Our Lord said firmly, “If you love Me, keep my Commandments.” And homosexual activity is contrary to the moral law of purity and goodness enshrined in the Commandments, particularly Commandments 6 and 9. It has always been considered by the Church as one of the four sins that cry to Heaven for vengence.

Even more muddle-headed is Australia’s World Youth Day coordinator, Auxiliary Bishop Anthony Fisher, who approved Sebastian “stirring and uplifting” song entitled “Receive the Power”.

In fact, Guy Sebastian will “perform the song at the World Youth Day in July 2008”.

Bishop Fisher went on to say that Sebastian “knew we needed a song that would inspired young people of the world to take up Christ’s challenge to go to the end of the earth and be his witnesses...”

The Vatican’s Pontifical Council of the Laity, the Vatican discastery overseeing the youth day preparations, “granted its approval and support” for the theme during Bishop Fisher’s visit to Rome in April.

The approval of a theme song written by a pro-homosexual rock star is yet another indication of what we have said for years: that World Youth Day promotes a counterfeit religion foreign to Catholicism. It is first and foremost a celebration of the pagan pop culture with a thin Christian veneer.

Catholics should not only boycott World Youth Day, but they should also immediately write to the Vatican’s Pontifical Council of the Laity, and to the Congregation for Worship and the Sacraments to protest this mockery of the Catholic religion.
